Interview with Coffee Farmer Aaron Fernandes: Rooted in the Mountains of Costa Rica

At Artisan Blend Coffee, we’re passionate about sharing the stories behind every bean. Today, we’re honored to feature Aaron Fernandes, a dedicated coffee farmer from the highlands of Costa Rica. His commitment to sustainable farming and coffee excellence represents everything we value: authenticity, quality, and connection to origin.

This interview offers a personal look into Aaron’s life on the farm and the traditions that shape Costa Rica’s rich coffee culture.

A Legacy Grown in Costa Rica’s Highlands

Q: Aaron, can you tell us about your farm and how your journey in coffee began?

Aaron: “Our farm is located in the Central Valley region of Costa Rica, where volcanic soil, steady rainfall, and cool temperatures create perfect conditions for Arabica beans. My parents started the farm, and I grew up working alongside them. After studying sustainable agriculture, I came back to modernize the farm with techniques that protect the land and improve bean quality.”

For Aaron, farming is not just work—it’s a family legacy rooted in respect for nature and craftsmanship.

Sustainability as a Way of Life

Q: What sustainable practices are important to you as a grower?

Aaron emphasizes organic composting, shade-growing under native trees, and water-conserving washing techniques. He also takes part in direct trade partnerships, allowing greater transparency and fair pricing for small farmers.

“We want to give back to the land that feeds us,” he says. “Our goal is to grow exceptional coffee in a way that protects the environment and supports the next generation.”

The Flavor of Costa Rica in Every Cup

Q: What makes Costa Rican coffee so special?

Aaron grows Caturra and Typica varietals, which are known for their clean, bright profiles and balanced acidity. His beans often feature tasting notes of citrus, red apple, cocoa, and sweet florals.

“Because we hand-pick at peak ripeness and use careful drying techniques, we preserve the clarity and complexity of the bean,” he explains.

Overcoming Challenges with Community

Q: What’s the biggest challenge in today’s coffee industry?

“Climate change is affecting harvest patterns and increasing costs,” Aaron admits. “But we work together as a community—sharing knowledge, weather tracking, and even equipment. It’s hard work, but there’s real solidarity here.”

Despite the obstacles, Aaron says seeing his coffee enjoyed around the world makes it all worthwhile.

A Shared Vision with Artisan Blend Coffee

Aaron’s commitment to quality and sustainability aligns with Artisan Blend Coffee’s mission: to support ethical sourcing and share exceptional coffees with meaning behind every mug. We are proud to roast beans from farms like Aaron’s—where tradition, transparency, and terroir come together.
