From the Highlands of Ethiopia: A Story of Tradition, Family, and Exceptional Coffee

At the heart of every great cup of coffee is a story—of people, of place, and of passion. In the misty highlands of Ethiopia, where coffee is believed to have originated, one family farm continues a legacy generations in the making. This is the story of an Ethiopian coffee-growing family whose commitment to quality, sustainability, and tradition brings out the best of the land they call home.

A Farm Rooted in Generations

Nestled in the Sidama region of southern Ethiopia, the Abebe family farm is more than just land—it’s a heritage. Passed down through four generations, the farm thrives on heirloom Arabica varietals that grow in the fertile, red volcanic soil at altitudes exceeding 6,000 feet. The climate is ideal: warm days, cool nights, and consistent rainfall.

These conditions, combined with the family’s deep knowledge of the land, yield coffee beans with distinct flavor notes—often described as floral, citrusy, and tea-like with hints of stone fruit and bergamot.

Sustainable, Organic, and Ethical Practices

The Abebe family follows organic, shade-grown practices that mirror traditional Ethiopian farming methods. Coffee shrubs are cultivated under a natural canopy of native trees, which supports biodiversity and enriches the soil. The family uses compost and natural fertilizers, and every bean is hand-picked at peak ripeness.

Many Ethiopian farms like theirs participate in community-driven cooperatives, ensuring fair wages, local reinvestment, and access to global markets through direct trade relationships.

The Signature Taste of Ethiopia

Ethiopian coffee is globally recognized for its bright acidity, complex aroma, and clean, juicy finish. The Abebe family uses a natural (dry) processing method, in which ripe coffee cherries are dried on raised beds under the sun. This method preserves the fruit’s sugars, intensifying the flavor and body of the final cup.

Their beans are then carefully sorted and milled, resulting in a high-quality specialty coffee that shines in every brew method—from pour-over and Chemex to espresso and French press.

A Connection from Farm to Cup

What sets the Abebe family apart isn’t just their skill—it’s their heart. They believe that when you drink their coffee, you’re not just enjoying a beverage, you’re sharing in their story.
